CANTER OHIO is a winner at ThistleDown
The new ThistleDown Racino held a Controlled Demonstration on April 2nd as it prepared for its grand opening on Tuesday, April 9th. CANTER Ohio was chosen as one of three local charities to benefit from the proceeds of that day. We can’t thank the management enough for recognizing the need to give back to the horses who have given their hearts for the sport. This money will allow us to expand our program and take in even more horses from the track.

It's an all-volunteer organization with affiliates across the country, where people scour the "backsides" of racetracks every weekend and document the horses up for sale, executive director Nancy Koch said. "The racetrack is quite a closed-in world. Not everyone can wander into the backside, you need to be escorted otherwise. We broke a lot of barriers that way," Koch said. Other CANTER affiliates in "phase two" have taken in horses and provided rehabilitation so they can find new homes. They placed more than a thousand horses in 2012, according to the Homes for Horses Coalition." Since the first CANTER Michigan program started in 1997, it and has grown to include affiliates in Arizona, California, Colorado, Gulf South, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Mid Atlantic, New England, Ohio, Pennsylvania. All the CANTER programs are all-volunteer organizations with 501c3 non profit status. |
