How You Can Help
Become a Mid Atlantic Volunteer!
CANTER Mid Atlantic could not possibly survive without the dedication and perseverance of our hardworking volunteers. Thanks to them, we are able to continue on and help owners and trainers place their Thoroughbreds in loving homes. We are always looking for volunteers to visit the track, help with buyers and network in the Horse community. We take our volunteering seriously, and ask people to commit to helping regularly as they would any other job. Track visit and farm volunteers will be asked to visit the racetrack at least 1x per month.
Maryland Opportunities:
Racetrack visits--CANTER makes regular visits to Laurel, Pimlico, Bowie and Fair Hill Training Centers to speak with trainers and owners about retiring horses and selling them to the sporthorse market. This is a really fun way to become immersed in the true mission of CANTER, and is the most important thing that we do. Track visits occur on Saturday mornings, and we ask that track visit volunteers visit the racetrack with trip leaders at least once a month. The ability to operate a camera and send files to CANTER volunteers is a plus, but not necessary. *must be 18 or older.
Hands-On Horses--CANTER Mid Atlantic owns between 15 and 25 horses at any given time. Horses are located in the Mid-Atlantic region at various farms and the majority reside in Montgomery & Frederick County. Horses require weekly visits for grooming, once-over's and soundness evaluations. Additionally, assistance with holding for vets/farriers/dentists/chiropractors and showing horses to potential new owners is needed. Horse experience is appreciated, but not entirely necessary. Farm visit volunteers are asked to commit 2 visits a month. *must be 18 or older.
Delaware/Southeastern Pennsylvania Opportunities:
Racetrack visits--CANTER makes regular visits to Delaware Park racetrack to speak with trainers and owners about retiring horses and selling them to the sporthorse market.
North Carolina Opportunities:
CANTER has recently expanded operations to North Carolina and currently houses two horses in the Southern Pines area. CANTER is on the search for a farm so that we can house up to 10 horses. Volunteer opportunities to follow soon!
Out of the Area or Can't get to the CANTER tracks or farms?
There are many ways to help CANTER in it's mission to rehome Thoroughbreds. CANTER horses sell to homes all over the country, and the most helpful thing to do is to spread the word in your area about our mission. There are many ways to do this listed below:
- Print out Horse Listings and post them at Feed and Tack Stores, Horse Shows or Horse club events.
- Request printed brochures from CANTER to distribute at various locations.
- Send the link to horse listings at CANTER or racetracks to friends, horse organizations and distribution lists in your area.
- Create "donation jars" for CANTER to be displayed at Tack and Feed stores to collect money and Southern States Proof of Purchase.
- Help with our Newsletter, editing the website, and creating new content.
