Cart's SinkorSwim - handsome 9yo chestnut gelding

Cart's SinkorSwim - handsome 9yo chestnut gelding

Cart's SinkorSwim, or Swimmer (as we call him) is really in need of help.  His last owner more or less abandoned him and his friend Private Dance.  Their feet are a mess, their manes were down to their shoulders, but they are being taken care of now and ready for their new homes.  ... Read more

Private Dance - one start at the track - lovely 9yo chestnut mare, very cute

Private Dance, aka Dancer, along with her friend Cart's Sinkorswim, was sadly neglected and abandoned at the track by her previous owner.  Her feet are a mess (they are now trimmed) and her mane was very long, but she's being taken care of now and is much happier. ... Read more

Tokyo Chiller, lovely 4yo dappled grey COLT

Tokyo Chiller is indeed one chill dude. He handled well for us and has nice ground manners.   He is a 4 year old colt and was lightly raced (4 starts total, 3 in 2012 and 1 in 2013).  He is a lovely dappled grey and stands approximately 15.2 or 15.3 hands (he is still growing too).  ... Read more

Sherrae, 3 year old chestnut filly with chrome

Sherrae is a sweet young thing, 15.3 hands and growing.  She turned 3 on May 26th, so she's still just a baby!  She is lightly raced with 4 career starts, (1 start in 2012 and 3 starts in 2013).  She has a great build, nice markings and is a lovely mover.     Read more

Welcome to CANTER Illinois & Missouri

Welcome to CANTER IL.  Please check out the horses we have available in our TRAINER LISTINGS (look at menu on left) who are  looking for that perfect forever home!!

CANTER Illinois is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing retiring racehorses with opportunities for new careers after the finish line.  We have successfully transitioned over 500 horses from Fairmount Park, Arlington Park and Hawthorne!  We operate primarily out of Fairmount Park and the Saint Louis, MO area but also have and need volunteers to help in Chicago at Arlinton and Hawthorne.

CANTER believes Thoroughbreds are winners on and off the track!

If you are a trainer and would like us to list a horse for you, please contact Jodi or Aletta (Ah-let-ah)

When the race is over" on CNN 5-3-2013

"CANTER, a member of the coalition, was one of the first groups to create an online showcase of ex-racehorses in 1997. It's an all-volunteer organization with affiliates across the country, where people scour the "backsides" of racetracks every weekend and document the horses up for sale, executive director Nancy Koch said.

"The racetrack is quite a closed-in world. Not everyone can wander into the backside, you need to be escorted otherwise. We broke a lot of barriers that way," Koch said.

Other CANTER affiliates in "phase two" have taken in horses and provided rehabilitation so they can find new homes. They placed more than a thousand horses in 2012, according to the Homes for Horses Coalition."

CANTER Horse Blogs - come follow along!

CANTER Mid Atlantic blogs have been a smashing success as indicated by our thousands of visitors.  In an effort to chronicle the ups and downs of Thoroughbred Retraining, we have several people who have volunteered to write about their day-to-day experience with individual horses. This has proven to provide a wonderful learning opportunity for the Thoroughbred-buying public, as well as being an amazing opportunity for our horses. Our goal to bring each horse from the racetrack to recognized competition has been going swimmingly, and we love the support along the way. If you haven't read the blogs, we hope you will, and join in on the journey.
