"When the race is over" on CNN 5-3-2013

"CANTER, a member of the coalition, was one of the first groups to create an online showcase of ex-racehorses in 1997. It's an all-volunteer organization with affiliates across the country, where people scour the "backsides" of racetracks every weekend and document the horses up for sale, executive director Nancy Koch said.

"The racetrack is quite a closed-in world. Not everyone can wander into the backside, you need to be escorted otherwise. We broke a lot of barriers that way," Koch said.

Other CANTER affiliates in "phase two" have taken in horses and provided rehabilitation so they can find new homes. They placed more than a thousand horses in 2012, according to the Homes for Horses Coalition."

The new ThistleDown Racino held a Controlled Demonstration on April 2nd  as it prepared for its grand opening on Tuesday, April 9th.  CANTER Ohio was chosen as one of three local charities to benefit from the proceeds of that day.  We can’t thank the management enough for recognizing the need to give back to the horses who have given their hearts for the sport.  This money will allow us to expand our program and take in even more horses from the track.

CANTER: Giving Thoroughbreds New Chances!

Last Updated (Wednesday, 07 November 2012 11:34)

Welcome to CANTER

CANTER stands for The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses. CANTER started as a solution to help racehorses find new careers by connecting buyers and sellers through posting racehorses for sale on the Internet. The program quickly became a national web-based phenomenon.  Since the first CANTER Michigan program started in 1997, it and has grown to include affiliates in Arizona, California, Colorado, Gulf South, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Mid Atlantic, New England, Ohio, Pennsylvania. All the CANTER programs are all-volunteer organizations with 501c3 non profit status.

The affiliates in Arizona, California, Kentucky, Michigan, Mid Atlantic, New England and Ohio have also expanded their CANTER programs to include owner relinquished horse adoption programs, where CANTER assumes ownership of the horse and all associated expenses.  Many of these CANTER Phase II programs have affiliations with veterinary colleges such as Michigan State University and Ohio State University, where horses receive necessary surgical procedures to return to soundness.
