trainer listings

LISTINGS UPDATED AS OF 8/13/2008
PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THE FAQs ABOUT VISITING THE TRACK

These horses DO NOT require adoption applications. Please contact the listed owner directly for more information.

If you make an appointment with a trainer, don't be a "no show". No shows are the kind of thing that can ruin the CANTER program, and hurt the horses, in the end, as it discourages trainers from listing retiring horses. If you can't make it, call them and cancel. It only takes a minute, and a deserving horse might have a chance at a new life because of your courtesy.
NOTICE: PLEASE ONLY CALL A SELLER, AND/OR MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO COME SEE A HORSE OR HORSE(S) AT THE TRACK OR ON THE FARM, IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT BUYING AN OTTB.

If you do not have the stall, funds, training resources, or other arrangements in place to take on a horse at this time, please do not call the trainers or come to the track/farm, out of fairness to the horses (and to people taking the time out of their workday to show and talk about their horses to you. )
IF TRAINERS FEEL THAT THEY ARE WASTING THEIR TIME ON "TIREKICKERS," THESE HORSES ARE THE ONES WHO ULTIMATELY PAY THE PRICE. Thank you for your consideration.

(Wonder how the trainers view the selling experience?

Prospective owners who are ready to bring home an OTTB now are invited to inquire about available horses.

If you are seriously interested in one or more of the horses listed on this page, please contact the trainer/owner noted in the listing for more information and to arrange to come see the horse.

If you would prefer to come look at horses while escorted by a CANTER NE volunteer, please e-mail us to make an appointment for a Saturday morning (volunteers are available to escort buyers from 8-11 AM on Saturdays. We regret that, as volunteers, we are only able to escort buyers on Saturday mornings; please contact trainers directly to schedule appointments on other days/times).

I need a new home - make an offer!

2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T06-2058-08. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Chestnut, 16 hands, 8 years old
A collective "OOOOH!" went up from the volunteers when we took "Moondance's listing! Here is a horse who will make the judges take good notice, but also has the kind of even-keeled disposition that will make him a barn favorite. He is
very attractive with a substantial, "old style" TB build, and is a very nice mover to boot! Price Reduced: $1,200, VERY negotiable: open to offers from good homes! Call May Conkey at 978-973-3955.

2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T06-2080-08. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Liver chestnut with chrome, 15.2 hands, 6 years old
"Cashmere Kelly" is a striking lass with rich coloring - she has flaxen streaks in her mane and tail! - and a calm, relaxed personality. Owner has had her for most of her life and states that she is perfectly sound, no issues - in fact, she's such a natural athlete, she's already been started under saddle! Goes w/t/c beautifully, jumps a 2'6" course with the potential to go higher. Unlimited possibilities abound for this girl: pony club, child's hunter/jumper, even eventing! Now back at Suffolk Downs! Price: $3,999 negotiable. Call Alan Lockhart, 508-415-9022 or e-mail alpal2187@yahoo.com.

T06-2176-10. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Steel gray/roan, 16 hands, 7 years old
"Gothic" is a beautiful horse looking for a new home. This gray stunner has some calcification in one ankle, but trainer says he's going completely sound on it; does have a small cloudy spot in his right eye, but is not bothered by it. This horse is very athletic and naturally quick on his feet: he can be strong, so is a good choice for an experienced rider who wants a bold and courageous mount. Price: $2,500 negotiable. Call Ed Connolly, 813-495-8714.

T06-2226-11. TRAINER-OWNED STALLION, Bay, 15.2 hands, 8 years old
"Baldski's Image" is about the most un-stallion-like stallion you'll ever meet: he is truly lovable, sweet, and a peach to handle! Baldski is a well-bred boy (son of Mecke and grandson of the beloved Ferdinand) who raced primarily on turf; he is sound with very little mileage on his legs. Baldski is used to being turned out on the farm; though he is still green under saddle, he has such an excellent temperament and work ethic that he should make retraining very easy in the right hands! Price: $3,750; good home a must. On the farm in Saugus, MA, very close to Suffolk Downs - UPDATE 2008: going under saddle, looks beautiful! Call Michael Benson at 617-592-6934.

2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T07-2267-07. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Bay, 16 1/2 hands, 8 years old

"Betcha's Brat" really doesn't deserve his name; he's anything but! Betcha is the type of OTTB that everyone loves: he tries hard, wants to please, and is a solid citizen. He's been a winner on the track, but is slowing down; owner (who's had him for several years) wants to stop while he is sound and happy and ready to tackle a life after the finish line. He's been ridden on the farm and won't take long to get back in pleasure horse mode. Exercise rider stopped us to say, without prompting, "he's as good a riding horse as you can ride, and that's on the record." Asking $1,500 - excellent home a must! Call Pat Vassallo at 413-813-5456.

2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T07-2285-08. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Gray/roan with black points, 15.3 hands, 5 years old
"Julie Forsure" looks like a Breyer horse, with his rich coloring and soft, lovely eye! A trusting and sensitive horse, he was bred and raised by his trainer and has all the makings of a serious show prospect (many of this trainer's horses have gone on to great success in the hunter/jumper and eventing worlds!) Trainer
can tell he's a far better fit for the show scene than the track, and wants to cut his losses now. Price: $3,500 negotiable. Call Dale Salim, 508-285-7473.

2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T07-2342-09. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Chestnut with LOTS of chrome, 16.3 hands, 5 years old
"Let's Go Big Red" is both BIG and impossible to ignore! He stands over a lot of ground and has a beautiful head/neck -- photos don't do him justice! Trainer doesn't have the resources to keep him going at the track, and she knows he'll have a great life away from racing. Price: $2,000. Call Sharon Hodges at 978-417-9936.

T07-2346-09. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Chestnut, 16.1 hands, 8 years old
"Corporate Intrigue" is very athletic and has the potential to do really anything! He just needs someone to take him there. Sound, clean-legged, no vices...will be a great retraining project for the experienced horseperson. Can be seen on the farm in Bernardston, MA (about half an hour north of Amherst). Price Reduced: $2,500. Call Curtis Brown at 413-648-0010 or e-mail pappybrown@verizon.net.

2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T07-2351-09. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Gray/roan, 15.3 hands, 5 years old

"Silver Link"
is spunky and engaging. She has beautiful "rocking horse" coloring...if you're looking for show-ring flash, she's your girl! Her pedigree is unusual and impressive, too: on the top, her ancestors include Kentucky Derby winner and superb sire Sunday Silence and Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, and on the bottom, she descends from Cure the Blues...one of the great American stallions, himself, as well as versatile and striking French sire Grey Dawn. Come check out this pretty lady! Price: $1,000 negotiable to a good home. Call Tito at 603-818-9714.

T07-2353-09. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Bay, 15.1 hands, 5 years old
Look up "born kid's prospect" in the dictionary and you'll see "Arrested Gatorgirl"'s picture! This darling little mare is willing, gentle, and has some great off-the-track riding experience under her belt - she has been ridden on the farm by her trainer's 13-year-old daughter. Racing is not really her cup of tea, but she will be a star as a lucky child or teenager's riding buddy! Price: $2,000 negotiable. Call Wayne Sargent, 352-229-0509.
<--NEW PHOTO!
T07-2386-10. TRAINER-OWNED STALLION, Bay, 15/15.1 hands, 6 years old, You can't ask for a better pedigree in a sporthorse sire than "Mardo Kayo"'s: he is by the phenom sire Fit to Fight! A breeding career isn't the only thing this flashy gentleman would shine in, however; Kayo is sound, and excellent mover, and very nicely put together - short-coupled and correct. Has been ridden on the farm and owner says he "doesn't have a clue he's a stallion." Can be seen on the farm in Saugus, MA, very close to Suffolk Downs - UPDATE 2008: continues to go under saddle and is a natural! Price: $3,750 negotiable - good home a must! Call Michael Benson, 617-592-6934.
2008: BACK IN THE LISTINGS! T07-2387-10. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Near white, 15.3 hands, 6 years old
"Tir Na Og" captured many, many hearts when he was first listed on our web site last year...and broke just as many when he was sold to another trainer to race! Happily for his fans, he is now back for sale, as he's demonstrating that his heart just isn't into racing anymore. Trainer fawns over him - she loves giving him "beauty treatments!" - and while sad at the prospect of letting him go, looks forward to hearing about his future exploits as a riding horse! Strikingly handsome, with his snowy coat and Bambi eyes, he is also an absolute love to be around - so gentle that he should make a wonderful kid's horse with retraining! Price Reduced: $3,000 - very negotiable to a great home. Call May Conkey at 978-973-3955.

T08-2427-04. TRAINER-OWNED COLT, Dark bay, 15.2 hands and growing (should top out at 16+!), 3 years old
"Number One" (he is unregistered and unnamed) is a gorgeous youngster who has everything going for him...he's unraced, sound, very nice-looking, and has excellent ground manners. Halter-broke with some basics under saddle; per owner, an excellent pupil who should train up to any level! By Sharp Runner, he is a grandson of Pleasant Colony, who is renowned for passing along not only great height and substance, but work ethic, smarts, and athleticism, too. He does not have papers. Owner moving and can't take this guy or his counterpart below (open to a package deal); only concern is an excellent home.
Price: All offers considered, but serious inquiries from good homes with references only, please. Call John at 978-914-4835.

T08-2428-04. TRAINER-OWNED COLT, Dark bay, 15.2 hands and growing (should top out at 16+!), 3 years old
"Number Two" (he is unregistered and unnamed) is a very handsome, sociable boy with a lovely build and great temperament. Unraced, sound, and clean-legged - fully halter trained and should learn fast under saddle. Is by Lionhearted (a Storm Cat grandson!), but does not have papers. Owner moving and can't take this guy or his counterpart above (open to a package deal); only concern is an excellent home.
Price: All offers considered, but serious inquiries from good homes with references only, please. Call John at 978-914-4835.

T08-2430-04. TRAINER-OWNED FILLY, Dark bay, ~15 hands and growing fast, 2 years old
"Tranquility's Hope" is a wonderful filly who is as lovely as her name, in every way! Beautiful girl (a granddaughter of the legendary sire and Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled, with Silver Buck on her dam's side),  gentle and kind. She was born with a crooked leg, and cannot hold up to racing. However, she gets around just fine, and this should not prevent her from becoming a first-rate pleasure horse or companion! She is green under saddle but has perfect manners - a true lady. P
rice: Open to all offers from excellent homes with references - owner loves this girl and wants to do right by her. She will light up someone's life! Can be seen on the farm in Saugus, MA, very close to Suffolk Downs. Call Michael Benson, 617-592-6934.

T08-2433-05. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay, 16+ hands, 11 years old
"Prado Power" is absolutely GORGEOUS: look at that build (what a neck set), nice big feet, and regal demeanor! A professional, kind, and intelligent animal, this magnificent son of famed Irish stallion El Prado has been an outstanding competitor, but is showing clear signs that he's bored with this racing stuff and ready to move on to something new. Trainer says he's "a dream to work with" - and he's at the perfect age to transition into a new athletic pursuit; come meet this handsome gent! Price: $2,500 negotiable. Call Ozzie Rivera, 401-617-1657.

T08-2434-05. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Chestnut with chrome galore, 16 hands, 9 years old
"Whateveryouwant" is flashy and attractive...lots of chrome and excellent under saddle! He is a good athlete and has enjoyed a successful racing career, but it's time to move on to new challenges and greener pastures. Price: $3,000. Call Dave Lezell at 781-956-0404.

T08-2437-05. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay, 16 hands, 5 years old
"Ready to Fleet" is a LOVEBUG! This classically handsome boy is so kind that he was brought out for his photo by a young boy, using just a lead shank. Trainer brought him back from the farm to retrain as an outrider pony, but has two others and has decided to scale back. Don't miss this sweet looker! Price: $2,500 negotiable.  Call John at 603-849-5669.

T08-2438-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Bay, 16.1 hands, 7 years old
With easy, smooth movement and a substantial build,
"De Charmer"
very quickly caught the attention of the CANTER volunteers.  This good-natured gelding has great bone and will transition very well to a less strenuous career.  He had the start of a minor suspensory tear, but the vets give him a very good prognosis for  life as a riding horse!  Price: $3,500 OBO.  Call Michelle Jeffrey at 339-293-9462.

T08-2440-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay, 16.1 hands, 4 years old
With only two starts under his belt, "Corvetting Mike" has the nice long stride and daisy cutter motion that's perfect for the hunter ring!  He did have ankle surgery to remove a small chip last October, but he is jogging sound and his prognosis is excellent.
Price Reduced: $3,000 negotiable to a good home.  Contact Diane Cerundolo at passageeast@comcast.net or 603-553-0074.

I need a new home - make an offer!

T08-2443-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Liver chestnut, 15.2 hands, 4 years old
Just like the designer with an almost identical name, “Armanni” is pure class, elegance, and never goes out of style! What a great-looking horse...and if you are looking for the perfect mount for a child or small adult, this is your boy: so sweet, trainer says little kids can walk right up to him and he’ll put his head down for pats and scratches. She describes him as a “big puppy dog who just doesn’t want to run!” Sound (he jogged out perfectly for us) and immensely kind, he’s adorable and a steal! PRICE REDUCED: $1,000 - MUST SELL! Call Michelle Tasso at 781-244-9884.

T08-2447-06. TRAINER-OWNED STALLION, Gray, 17 hands, 4 years old
"Hunk Richardson" is a big and BEAUTIFUL specimen with size and substance galore; has the physique of a quarter horse! Trainer describes him as “too big and too slow to be a racehorse.” He was lovely to handle for his photo shoot, and grabs your attention as soon as you see him
! Great feet and particularly well put-together for his height, too! Does have a soft, malleable bump on his right front knee; trainer says he's had it for years and it doesn't hurt him at all. Price: $3,500 negotiable. Updated contact information: call Eddie Stone at 781-245-5733 or Lloyd Lockhart at 617-852-4166.

T08-2448-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Bay, 15.2 hands, 7 years old
"Rizzi's Gossip" is a supremely cute (look at those adorable big ears) and easygoing fellow who is always a pleasure to work around; trainer says he's even easy to gallop on the track in the mornings. That steady-eddie disposition is likely why he's not exactly setting track records! Trainer looking to cut her losses while finding this adorable boy a new job that makes him happy. Price: $1,000 negotiable to a good home. Call Terry McCarthy at 727-385-8397.

T08-2453-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Bay, 16 hands, 4 years old
"Flying Freddy" has a great name to go with his A+ personality. "Gentle, gentle, gentle" describes this boy: and that's his problem on the track - racing is a bit too overwhelming for a gelding who'd much rather soak up pats and peppermints, enjoy a jaunt through the field or trails, or strut his stuff in the ring! Trainer says Freddy is sound (the wrap in the first photo was for a stone bruise that's healing nicely), lightly raced, a nice mover..."just a big scaredy cat on the track!" Does crib but is fine with a cribbing strap. Price: $1,000 to a good home. Call Leona McKanas, 781-727-7226.

T08-2455-06. TRAINER-OWNED COLT, Bay, 16.1 hands (and growing), 3 years old
"Big Brother" hasn't a clue that he's a colt: he has exceptional ground manners and is a complete gentleman in his stall! He stood quietly while his trainer petted his face and accepted lots of attention from the CANTER volunteers. With a great big neck and chunky build, this is one substantial horse; he's a true athlete, but not fast enough to pay the bills. He can be quite tough to gallop in the mornings, and is a good-feeling horse, so is not for a beginner or less confident rider; but time on the farm should settle this youngster down, and help harness his athleticism for a top-level show career.  Price: $3,999 negotiable.  Call John Bagnera at 781-264-5972.

T08-2456-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Bay, 16.2 hands, 5 years old
Here's how the CANTER volunteer who took his listing describes "Lunchtime Prank": "I love him. To the point I don't want you to put him on the site in case I win the lottery and he can be mine. But that would be wrong. :)" This is a big guy with excellent hooves that reflect his turf breeding. He has never made a start; did not enter race training until he was 3, as he was still maturing, then had some complications from his gelding procedure as a 4-year-old that resulted in a few months of soaking up the sun on a Florida farm. At this point, trainer recognizes he's not going to make it as a racing superstar, but knows he'll be someone's favorite riding/show horse! Stood like a statue for his photo, rested his head on the volunteers' shoulders...and, says trainer, "he'll follow you anywhere as long as you have food!" Come meet him before our volunteer goes broke on lotto tickets! Price: $2,500 negotiable. Call Wayne Sargent, 352-229-0509.

T08-2461-06. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Near white, 17 hands,
8 years old

"The Big Ugly" has a name that's not only unfortunate, it's entirely inaccurate, too! There is nothing even close to ugly about this mare; she's tall, striking, kind...and has LOTS of off-the-track training and show experience! Beautiful form over fences...has gone up to 2'6", always keeps her knees nice and tight, and is very intuitive about a course and judging distances. A whiz at flying lead changes, too! Has run primarily on turf, and has stayed sound and in great shape throughout her career. She's been with the same owner/trainer for years, and her excellent care shows in her open, friendly nature. Price: $3,999 firm. Serious inquiries, please, to Henry Rosenthal at 603-568-8804.

T08-2464-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark gray with roaning, 15.2 hands, 5 years old
"Buzzin Around" is described by his trainer as "one in a million - he has the best personality!" This adorable boy (check out those bangs in his photo!) is a born ham...always charming in exchange for attention and petting. Trainer notes with loving frustration that Buzz is sound but "never gets anything done on the track because he's too busy clowning around!" Price: $3,000 negotiable. Call Bernie Bramante, 617-291-5104.

T08-2465-06. TRAINER-OWNED FILLY, Chestnut, 16 hands (and still growing!), 3 years old
"Alexia's Choice" very nearly snuck home with an 8-year-old girl visiting the track the day the CANTER volunteers took her picture (too bad for the smitten would-be owner, Mom and Dad weren't quite planning on adding a horse to the family!) This filly is snuggly as can be and very, very gentle. Her groom calls her "Tina Turner" because "she's so classy, has long legs, and never takes a step wrong!" Sound and clean-legged, just too slow to make her living as a racehorse. Price: $3,999 negotiable. Call Ernie Poxon, 813-732-5728.

T08-2468-06. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Seal bay, 16.3 hands,
7 years old

"Nine Ballads" (note corrected name) means a great deal to his trainer: she saved his life after he suffered a suspensory injury while racing for another outfit. He will need another 2-3 months of stall rest, before slowly being brought back to work. However, he has a wholly calm and trusting disposition that makes him the ideal patient! A big, handsome boy with heart and smarts, he should make a fun buddy for shows and pleasure after his recuperation. (Trainer is happy to put prospective buyers in touch with the treating vet for more information.) Price: $1,500 to an excellent home. Call Al Michelson at 352-207-9823 and ask to leave a message for Pamela Pompell.

T08-2471-06. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Dark bay, 16.3 hands, 7 years old
"Wynn's Whim" is a sporthorse breeder's dream: a very talented athlete (she's won well over $100,000 for her connections while remaining consistent and competitive) with an impressive pedigree. She's by Matty G, with a damline defined by the legendary Alydar! Wynn is a BIG girl with a graceful, feminine face and that elusive "look of eagles." She has excellent bone and is sure to impart substance as well as class to her babies. Does have some enlargement in one ankle, so not a candidate for high-level jumping or eventing, but should be a fantastic retraining prospect for dressage and other flatwork! Trainer says Wynn is clearly tired of racing after her long and accomplished career, and deserves to move on to greener pastures as a riding horse or mama. Price: $2,000, very negotiable...make an offer! Call Jill Lorenz, 603-479-5098.
<--Look at this stunning expression!

T08-2475-07. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Near black, 16.2 hands, 6 years old
 Wow...what a good thing
the volunteers don't have
extra stalls at home...our Executive Director actually saw "Pay It Forward" on the walking machine and asked about him, he was so stunning! (note: there's nothing wrong with his feet - just mud on them in the photo!) Turns out that the trainer wanted to list him for sale, as luck would have it. If you're looking for a stunning show prospect, there aren't many better- looking specimens than this one. Price: $1,500.
NEW CONTACT INFORMATION: Now on the farm in Ipswich, MA. Call 978-758-0631.

T08-2476-07. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Bay with blaze, 16.1 hands, 7 years old
"Precipitory's Bid" is a charming mare with the most engaging, pretty face. Her trainer has had this horse for some time, and wants to see her go to a loving home. She has an old osselet (ankle calcification) on her left front, but it's not bothering her. She was a very good runner earlier in her career, and has a noteworthy lineage - a granddaughter of Cure the Blues on her sire's side, and Darn That Alarm on her dam's; this is a mare who could produce some seriously athletic sporthorse babies, or, with her temperament and size (she should fill out beautifully off the track), make a great pleasure prospect, too!  We spent a loooong time patting this loveable, huggable girl. She's easy to fall for! Price: $1,500 negotiable; good home a must. Call David Sweet at 508-353-4357.
<--Can YOU say no to this face?

T08-2477-07. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Chestnut, 16.1 hands, 5 years old
"
Lucky Straight" is a very cute gelding with hunter looks, stride, and personality! An intelligent and willing sort, he moves beautifully...just SLOWLY! Trainer thinks he'll be great in a show career, and wants to find him a new job since he's simply not earning his keep on the track. Price: $3,000 negotiable. Call Joe Signore, 401-490-4444.

T08-2478-07. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Bright bay with black points, 16/16.1 hands, 5 years old
"Scatzee" is a regal son of the illustrious Irish stallion Sword Dance...he inherited his daddy's excellent looks and size, but apparently, not his ability as a racehorse. The running joke around his barn is that Scatzee is a "consistent runner"...consistently finishing fifth in nearly every race! He is big, correct, sound, and easy to be around. Trainer ready to cut his losses...very good news for a lucky buyer out there! Price: $3,000 negotiable. Call Junior Panton at 646-645-9549.

T08-2479-07. TRAINER-OWNED MARE, Chestnut with white flecks, 15.3 hands, 6 years old
"Gracie Lu Freebush" may win the award for most fun name ever on the CANTER listings (and yes, that really is her registered name!) This lovely Mr. Prospector granddaughter is currently on the farm and hacking quietly; owner reports she's a peach to handle: clips, loads, and turns out like a true lady! Can be seen on the farm in West Bridgewater, MA. Price: $1,000 OBO - open to reasonable offers from great homes! Call Kathy at 508-857-2526 or e-mail kates_pony@msn.com

T08-2481-07. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay, 16.1 hands, 5 years old
"Saxon Warrior" is a well-balanced horse with a big step...excellent range of motion and a very eye-catching mover! Owner says this gelding has no vices or issues - he's sound, good-natured, and has a great mind. Price: $3,000. Call Mark Bliss at
267-221-5292.

T08-2482-07. TRAINER-OWNED GELDING, Dark bay, 16.2 hands, 5 years old
"Halo's Slate Clean" is
a strapping gentleman - one of the most agreeable (and handsome) fellows you'll ever meet! Trainer just got this boy in his barn,
