Adopting a horse through CANTER is a 5 step process.
Click on one of the steps to learn more.
Anyone interested in adopting a horse from CANTER is required to fill out the Adoption Approval Form, which can be found on the website. It should only take you 10-15 minutes to fill it out online.
You can also print out the pdf and mail it to the contact address listed on this page.
Please call your veterinary clinic to let them know they will be receiving a Vet Reference and ask them to respond to it.
Please fill out the Approval Form even if you don’t yet see the right horse for you. You may be pre-approved when you find your horse. If you wait, the horse you want may be adopted by someone who is already approved.
Once CANTER approves you, you are approved to adopt a CANTER-owned Thoroughbred from any CANTER affiliate.
Once your Approval Form has been processed you will be notified by e-mail stating that you are either approved or not approved. If not approved, the reasons will be explained.
The horse’s adoption fee must be paid before the horse is moved. Fee may be paid by cash, check, Master Card or Visa. If the horse needs additional certificates for shipping, there will be a charge for those services.
The Conditional Lifetime Bill of Sale (see attachments at end of this page) must be signed before the horse leaves our facility. The Conditional Lifetime Bill of Sale is a binding legal contract between you and CANTER. Make sure that you read the Bill of Sale and understand it completely.
Once the adoption fee has been paid, the adopter arranges transportation. For 3 days, CANTER will pay for the board of the horse. After 3 days, the adopter will be charged $15 a day for board of their new horse. If transportation is needed, talk to your CANTER representative. All horses must be picked up in a trailer large enough for a thoroughbred.
Below you will find a link to a form to help with the update requirement of your bill of sale.
Please fill out as completely as possible and include pictures. Pictures should be recent and show the horse without blanket or tack, so we may see the body condition of the horse. Please use separate forms provided for each horse (if adopted more than one). If you have sent us pictures within the last 6 months, you may wait and send them with your next update. We require updates during the first two years of ownership. After that, updates are not required, but much appreciated. Please let us know if you would like to be included in our “Success Stories” on our CANTER web page.
