Adopting a horse through CANTER is a 5 step process.
Click on one of the steps to learn more.
Anyone interested in adopting a horse from CANTER is required to fill out the Adoption Approval Form, which can be found on the website. It should only take you 10-15 minutes to fill it out online.
You can also print out the pdf and mail it to the contact address listed on this page.
Please call your veterinary clinic to let them know they will be receiving a Vet Reference and ask them to respond to it.
Please fill out the Approval Form even if you don’t yet see the right horse for you. You may be pre-approved when you find your horse. If you wait, the horse you want may be adopted by someone who is already approved.
Once CANTER approves you, you are approved to adopt a CANTER-owned Thoroughbred from any CANTER affiliate.
Once your Approval Form has been processed you will be notified by e-mail stating that you are either approved or not approved. If not approved, the reasons will be explained.
The horse’s adoption fee must be paid before the horse is moved. Fee may be paid by cash, check, Master Card or Visa. If the horse needs additional certificates for shipping, there will be a charge for those services.
The Conditional Lifetime Bill of Sale (see attachments at end of this page) must be signed before the horse leaves our facility. The Conditional Lifetime Bill of Sale is a binding legal contract between you and CANTER. Make sure that you read the Bill of Sale and understand it completely.
Once the adoption fee has been paid, the adopter arranges transportation. For 3 days, CANTER will pay for the board of the horse. After 3 days, the adopter will be charged $15 a day for board of their new horse. If transportation is needed, talk to your CANTER representative. All horses must be picked up in a trailer large enough for a thoroughbred.

CANTER is a 100% volunteer organization and is always in need of volunteers to help retiring Thoroughbred racehorses transition into new careers.

CANTER Texas is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to helping retired racehorses have better futures after the finish line.
CANTER stands for The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses. It started as a solution to help racehorses find new careers by connecting buyers and sellers through posting racehorses for sale on the internet. The program quickly became a national web-based phenomenon. Since the first CANTER program started in 1997, it has grown to include chapters all across the county. All CANTER affiliates are volunteer run organizations with 501(c)(3) non-profit status. Some chapters have horse adoption programs, where CANTER assumes ownership of the horse and all associated expenses, provides necessary medical treatment and retraining so the horse is better able to find a good home.
CANTER Texas was formed in 2014 and provides free advertising in our Trainer Listings section for Thoroughbred, Quarter Horses and Arabians who are recently retired or currently racing and looking for new careers. Horses are located at tracks in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, as well at farms throughout the state. Interested buyers should contact the owner/trainer in individual ads to answer any questions or arrange purchase. CANTER is not involved in the transaction and takes no fee or commission. If you would like to list a racehorse for sale, or are a buyer who needs assistance, please contact us!
There are many ways you can help! Donate money, items or services, volunteer your time or skills, and network by sharing available horses from our Facebook page!
We also have a Rehabilitation & Adoption Program, in which we assist racehorses with injuries that need treatment and recovery time. We provide them with veterinary care and place them in foster homes until they are ready for new homes. If you are interested in becoming a foster or adopting a CANTER owned horse, please contact us to fill out an application. If you are an owner/trainer with a racehorse in need of assistance, please contact us. Unfortunately due to limited funds and fosters, we cannot accept all horses into our Rehabilitation Program, but we will make every effort possible.

CANTER Texas Owned Program
Unfortunately, due to lack of funding and available foster homes, we have been forced to discontinue our CANTER Owned Adoption Program and will be focusing on the Trainer Listings Program. We will continue to monitor all horses we have adopted out to ensure they remain safe for the rest of their lives and will take any of these horses back if their adopters can no longer care for them. We would like to thank everyone who has supported this very important part of our program and we are so happy to have been able to provide these special horses with the care they needed to find their forever homes.
